Radio with Som: A Conversation

Radio Kosaten is resuming its regular programming after a short hiatus. As a first radio schedule for the second half of this year, Radio Kosaten is proud to present Som Supaparinya. Som is a video artist from Chiang Mai – northeast of Thailand, but she is currently in Tokyo doing research and residency. Aside from her stunning works across media, she is also known for her art projects that aims to bridge the art community and the public through her Chiang Mai Art Conversation (2013) and Asian Culture Station (2016). Som’s art projects extends her interests apparent in her video works that are inquisitive to the power structures of public information impacting people’s lives and their environment.
Continuing the “Against an Economy of Violence” theme of Radio Kosaten, which features the research topic “Contemporary Art and Alternative Education: Knowledge Economy in Asia” by researcher-duo Jong and Ion, Radio Kosaten is taking the opportunity to engage a conversation with Som by navigating together the following questions: How do contemporary art influence upon independent and alternative forms of engaging the public? What knowledge are being exchanged and developed between artists and public? And if we apply these similar questions to the issue of migration, what are the positive and negative impacts of knowledge exchange between cultures?
In this conversation, which deals with mutual learning and knowledge exchange, we are hoping to have a productive discussion on the dynamics of knowledge translocalization between cultures (artist/public and migrant/host). And, moreover, we are also excited to hear from Som Supaparinya about her recent research on migration issues.
