In Japanese society work is generally held as central importance, often formulating one’s very identity and social visibility. But what of those who are denied the visibility of their labour? To have an occupation is often viewed as taking your role in society, as the very particular phrase 社会人 implies. But for many people, their work is given very little recognition in society, whilst their labour is, in fact, vital to the functioning of our social and economic systems, which frequently exploit and depend upon this invisible labour.
