Starting Again Re-opening of kosaten In January of this year we were devastated to learn of the loss of one of our community members who sadly took their own life. Words fail us when we think of how their precious life was cut short and how we were unable to offer much needed support. We felt a strong sense of responsibility for their pain, and realized we had created an environment which contributed to their anguish. Their memory will always stay with us, their earnest dedication to fighting discrimination and injustice will continue to be a an important impetus and awareness to our future activities. We made the decision to temporarily close kosaten and enter a process of accountability and reflection. Over the past 8+ months we have dug deep as both individuals and as a community, grieving together and facing up to the array of issues which have built up within our relations over time. Over these past months we have seriously considered problematic dynamics which have leant themselves to the tolerance of certain forms of discrimination, a failure to voice up against certain harms, and a lack of authentic engagement and connection. Having gone through this process of honest and often painful conversations, we cannot claim to be a safer or better place but we have learnt alot more about each other, about our patterns of relation and communication, and the threads of power and contradiction which have run through our community. We have realized that much needs to change and this change is not something that can be realized over night. We have identified issues of power accumulation, gatekeeping, privatization, centralized authority, performativity, opaque decision making, discrimination, white supremacy, ableism, codependency, conflict evasion and more. In facing these issues we have reconfirmed our ground rules, practiced role play for difficult situations and have shared the principles of transformative justice to actively address conflicts. Our vision for the future of this community is a decentralized, self-organizing collective which commits to queer, migrant, disabled, refugee, precariat worker solidarity, collective care, transformative justice, which keeps making mistakes together and learning together, and is not afraid to face, discuss and tackle the structural discrimination which surrounds us all. There is still much to do, but this is an ongoing commitment which cannot happen in isolation, so we have decided to re-open kosaten this month as of 21st october and together continue to engage with these challenges. From now we hope to open every Wednesday 3pm-6pm with a focus on discussion around discrimination and social issues, and other days we will be open in accordance with the activities of independent “clubs”, such as craft club, kosaten computer club, cooking club, music club and language exchange club. (information will be updated on the website and instagram) As we tentatively reopen kosaten to the public we ask for compassion, understanding, patience, and also your courage and strength. But most of all we ask you to join with us in a renewed commitment to standing up for each other and joining hand in hand to help each other survive in a world which throws much at us each and every day. We will restart our open activities with a “big clean” on 21st October 12:00-18:00. We hope to bring fresh air to the space, clear out the dust which has settled here over time, and encourage everyone who wants to get involved to rummage through the materials and resources we have and think together how we might be able to utilize them in upcoming activities. We would be grateful if you could lend a hand in the opening up of kosaten and starting afresh. Decentralizing We have engaged in regular meetings every Wednesday in order to confront the issues of kosaten and try to rebuild a space for solidarity, mutual care and tackling discrimination. As part of these discussions we are following up on the model of how to truly decentralize and open up the community space and its organizational structures to wide participation. Part of this proposed structure is based on the formation of various autonomous groups each gathererd around a particular activity or topic. e.g. computer club, craft club, book club, kosaten pantry, queer cafe etc. Each group will be self organizing but will commit to the principles of kosaten and contribute to the up keep of the space. Each group will regularly feed back to each other about their activities and any issues which arise, with regular meetings to faciliate this sharing of information and to engage in decision making. There will be no central committee or staff. members will join the general meetings in rotation. Groups will also be formed for the different tasks of overal management of kosaten e.g. SNS/mailmagazine, finance, necessities etc. The equipment and resources of kosaten will be shared within the space and each group will take responsibility for the care of the space. We are also proposing a regular general assembly in which all can join in key decision making processes which impact the overall community space. |
