「I do get bored !
I get bored!」
The Condition of Hikikomori – From the perspective of someone with eye impairment – I do get bored! I get bored!
28th January 14:00-17:00
Listen Live: http://kosaten.org/ja/
One regular frequenter of kosaten has for a long time struggled with an eye condition, which causing an impact on his physical state, and leading him to become hikikomori, has made him feel an urgent need to tackle the problem.
He has visited to many ophthalmologists and other such experts but has not been able to find someone who will actually engage in dialogue with him. Having long felt that his voice is not being heard
he has decided to take up the platform of radio kosaten in order to speak out about his experiences.
Here are his words
The greatest cause for my difficulty of living in society I feel is my eye condition. As a result of this condition my vision is warped, I experience headaches, and feel pain and pressure in various parts of my body, which has also affected my ability to eat and gain nutrition.
I am in a condition of hikikomori but generally the discourse on hikikomori always focueses upon mental health or notions of work/labor and economic issues etc. and there is little room for talking about physical conditions (of the eye) and the lack of environment to actively tackle this which might also lead to the hikikomori condition.
I have various health conditions including scoliosis and other conditions I was born with, in addition to my eye condition,
which compound to make my situation more challenging.
As someone whose disability prevents them from social engagement I wish to talk directly with others and engage in a dialogue to share awareness towards these issues.
If I could engage with an eye expert in meaningful dialogue I am sure my condition could be significantly improved, but such an expert seems not to be found. Even though many people around me know of my need for such an expert no one is willing to help me find such a person, my condition is therefore put to one side and I become alienated by this.
On this occasion I don’t just want to talk in one direction about this experience but want to engage in dialogue with those who come to the space and the radio listeners and develop a positive conversation.
But even as I say this the words of Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy come to mind and I just want to shout
“I do get bored! I get bored”
